Now theCsárda has lost its significance, and it is only on marketdays or fair days when the different shepherds and cowboysof the Pusztas congregate together there, that any realactivity is to be seen. On quitting the Csárda you perceive some farm-housesinhabited by the officials, doctors, veterinary surgeons,Puszta judges, &c., of the Hortobágy estate, and largelabourers dwelling-houses and dairies. But after passingthese you may drive for hours and hours on this fabulouslylarge estate without meeting anything or anybody but theenormous herds of cattle, sheep, and horses tended byhundreds of men, while the only objects to attract the eyeare the old-fashioned drawing-wells standing up against thehorizon. What an interesting nomadic appearance this districtand its inhabitants present! And, indeed, this people areat the present day exactly in the same condition as weretheir ancestors when they occupied Hungary a thousandyears ago. In fine weather these shepherds
