All modern notices of Palmyra which I have readrefer to the fact that no fresh water is to be foundthere, and some express wonder at the ancient prosperityof the place in the absence of this requisite. The guidebooks recommend the traveller to bring a supply ofdrinking water with him, as the stream of sulphurouswater (which until 1888 was alone known in moderntimes as the source of supply there) is very disagreeableto the taste. We were therefore much surprised tofind that the stream near to which our tents werepitched was fresh and pure. It appears that it wasonly discovered in the summer of 1888, and that wewere the first European travellers to see it. It runsonly a few feet under the surface of the ground, in anold flagged
