Fresco fragment of a female flying angel amongst late 1300s or early 1400s Renaissance wall paintings by two important Sienese School artists, Bartolo di Fredi and Taddeo di Bartolo, in the Chiesa di San Francesco, Lucignano, Tuscany, Italy.
Lucignano, Val di Chiana, Tuscany, Italy: this small fresco fragment featuring a female flying angel survives amid the remains of wall paintings by two important 14th and 15th century early Renaissance artists in the Chiesa di San Francesco, the 13th century church dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi in the central Piazza del Tribunale of this well preserved medieval walled town. The artists were Bartolo di Fredi or Bartolo Battiloro (c. 1330-1410) and Taddeo di Bartolo or Taddeo Bartoli (c. 1363-1422). They were both born in Siena and are regarded as among the most influential of the group of artists known as the Sienese School, with examples of their art now preserved in museums and galleries worldwide. At the Franciscan church in Lucignano, they were both responsible for painting scenes from the life and travels of St. Francis. The church also contains one of Bartolo di Fredi’s most expressive works, the Triumph of Death, featuring a black-clad Grim Reaper riding a galloping black horse, aiming Death’s arrow at two unsuspecting Tuscan noblemen. The fresco is among the best-known and most highly regarded of the Triumph of Death artworks painted in Franciscan churches as the Black Death Plague pandemic swept across Europe in the mid-14th century, claiming the lives of between 75 million and 200 million people.
