Athlete's foot. Close-up of athlete's foot affecting the skin between a patient's toes. This condition, also called tinea pedis, is the most common form of ringworm, a fungal infection on the surface of the skin. It is caused by various species of fungi including Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. It is a highly contagious skin condition, spread by direct contact or via infected material. Athlete's foot is treated with antifungal creams or dusting powders.
