Before having procured this instrument I wasin great measure groping in the dark with reference tothe diagnosis as to the real condition of the vesicles, peri-vesiculitis and the rectal mucosa around the prostate. I have found the best way to use the instrument is topass it gently into the rectum and up to the sigmoid flex-ure; the obturator is then removed and the eye-piece, ormetal plug, is inserted, together with the air bulb. Gentlepressure of the latter distends the rectum around the vesi-cles, and also prevents the fecal matter from droppingdown within the tube. Mild distention of the rectumwith air discloses the condition of the vesicles and
