The com-mon shelter was, however, constructed with blankets,old shirts, &c, while a great number had no shelter atfill, or burrowed for the want of one in the ground. Anaristocratic shelter, which few could indulge in, wasmade of two blankets pinned together with wooden pegs,stretched upon a ridgepole running across two uprightsstuck into the ground, in imitation of an A tent; or twopoles were tied together, with both the ends stuck intothe ground, forming a semicircle.
