Sir George Back, a distinguished voyager and explorer in the Arcticregions, was born at Holly Vale, Stockport, in 1706. He entered the Navyat an early age, and accompanied Sir John Frankhn on his Arctic voyages in1818-19-23. In 1833 he undertook an overland journey in search of CaptainRoss. On this occasion he descended Back River till he reached the PolarSea, and then traced the coasts as far as Bathurst Inlet.
