Whenthe images reappeared, the tradition was shattered, theroot of the effort was cut, the artists of Byzantiumwere dispersed by exile into the near-by Orient, intoItaly, and as far as Spain and France. If Byzantineart survived, it was because the illuminators continuedtheir work in the monasteries right through the icono-clastic periods; it was because a renewal of energyfollowed the effort that Constantinople was to make in.
