This species, whichmay justly be considered the finest, and perhaps the mostelegant of the tree Willows, sgrows naturally to a verygreat size, with an outline,very frequently, of impos-ing elegance and picturesqueeffect, and which, as Gilpinobserves, fits it to appearin any rural scene. Such isits effect where it is left toits free growth, and wherethe disfiguring custom ofpollarding, so common inthe fenny parts of England, is either unknown or rarelypractised. In the north of England and Scotland, wheremineral fuel is cheap and plentiful, and no necessity existsfor the trimming and pollarding system, very fine examplesof this tree are often met with, and, when growing inan appropriate situation, such as on the banks of a river,the margin of a purling brook, or in one of our low,sheltered, and sunny haughs, it forms a beautiful andinteresting feature, its silvery and plume-like foliage giv
