Wildlife & sunrise in Southport, Merseyside. UK Weather. 21 Oct 2021. Overnight cold temperatures of 7C and clear skies as the sun rises over the RSPB Marshside important wetland nature reserve. A favourite spot for bird watchers to see the migrant flocks of ducks and geese rise from the feeding grounds. The reserve is used by large numbers of overwintering pink footed geese, from Iceland, and wigeon, part of the Ribble Regional Park Nature Reserve, one of the largest breeding grounds of wading birds in the UK and internationally recognised.

Part of the internationally important Ribble Estuary, Marshside has some of the best lowland wet grassland in the north-west of England. It is an important refuge in winter for pink-footed geese, wigeons, black-tailed godwits and golden plovers and in spring provides nesting places for lapwings and redshanks, which are declining elsewhere.
