Argent, four bars gules. This ought to be : Gules, four bars argent. Sir David Lindsay gives the arms: Barry of eight or andgules (15). The four silver bars have been fabled to have had their origin fromthe four principal rivers that thwart the country (Nisbet, i. 62).
