Hairy cell leukaemia, light micrograph of a section of bone marrow. Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is rare. It occurs mostly in people aged 40-60, more often in men and usually develops slowly. Leukaemia is a cancer of white blood cells and HCL affects a type of white blood cell called a B-lymphocyte. Typically the bone marrow contains large cells with a clear cytoplasm and irregular nuclei. Magnification: x 250 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
