His soil is of a deep,rich, sandy loam, and thoroughly examined this sort on clay grounds,where we found it doing well; and here, aswell as in a garden of light sandy soil, ithad received no protection the past winter,and but poor cultivation this Spring; and. ^^. Onecultivator of it declared that he could geta good crop of it yearly, without any cov-ering or winter protection. We doubt it. Among the red sorts, of old kinds, wefound the Hornet, literally loaded withfruit; of a dark, rich red ; large size ; fineflavor; pretty firm ; more so than most ofthe red; trusses with fifty to seventy-fiveberries; a little later in maturing than someother sorts, but universally regarded as Among the Easpherries, 265 among the, or one of the best. Most of itsgrowers, we also found, had been in thepractice of leaving it exposed to the winter;
