Shahrazad Telling Tales

Shahrazad (also spelled Shahrzad, Scheherazade, Scheherazadea) was a legendary Persian queen and the storyteller in the "Thousand and One Nights." Legend said that the Persian king Shahryar married a new wife every day. On the wedding night, he would kill his bride. However, on her wedding night, Shahrazad told the king a story. He was so enthralled that he wanted to hear another story and so delayed her execution. He did so for 1,000 nights, by which time he had fallen in love with her and then married her. The final story was added at a later date. In this illustration, dating to around 1906, Shahrazad is shown telling the king one of her stories.
