HYDRANGEA, Ornamental shrubs, when considered in relation to their foliage alone; and their additional Brand flowering qualities render them quite indispensable to any garden. The hardy sorts are ol St cXrein any good soil, the richer the more prolific results. The tender sorts should be deeply easiest culture in any B covered with mulch in winter, or taken into the cellar. The H. panic, grfl. is one of the most satisfactory of orna- mental shrubs, and is largely used, singly or in groups. The other hardy sorts are valuable for grouping with other shrubs. H. nivea. 5 ft. July. Very large, almost heart- shaped leaves, dark green above and silvery white beneath. Flowers pure white, in flat, broad heads. When disturbed by the wind the effects of the silvery under-surface, con- trasted with the usually deep-green foliage, is very effect- ive. 50 cents. _ H. paniculata. [Panicled Hydrangea.] i it. bept. A vigorous, broad-spreading shrub, thickly studded with lone terminal panicles of creamy-white flowers. 75 cents. H. paniculata var. grandiflora. [Large Panicle- flowered Hydrangea.] The showiest of all autumn- blooming shrubs, bearing immense heads of creamy-white flowers turning to pleasing shades of red. We have often picked trusses of the flowers measuring, fifteen inches in length. Its season of blooming (late Aug. and Sept.) renders it
