By this little ingenious Apparatus for testing water, invented by H. Danchell, any sort of impurities contained in the water, can bedetected immediately, and as all the tests are made dependent on theappearance of the water after the addition of one or another of the testfluids, it is brought within the reach of every one to ascertain, whatkind of water they drink; without going to the expense of applying to achemist to have it examined. The apparatus consist of seven small bottles, containing the standard testfluids; they are arranged to detect :—1. Ammonia; 2. Decomposedorganic matter; 3. Absence of lead; 4. Presence of lead; 5. Carbonate(bicarbonate) of lime; 6. Sulphate of lime and sulphuric acid ; 7. Iron;. besides these there are provided two test tubes, so as to permit of a com •parison for instance between filtered water, and the same water unfiltered,whereby their respective purities, and the use of the filter can be madeevident at once. A dropping glass is also provided for convenience. For further details we must refer our readers to a very clear and wellwritten little work, by the same gentleman : Water ; its Impurities ; * which contains, besides the directions for the use of theapparatus, much valuable information for everyone, and especially foragriculturists, brewers, dyers, owners of steam boilers, manufacturers,and many others.
