Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) held by Space Shuttle Discovery's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) during deployment. This was mission STS-48 (12th to 18th September 1991). UARS was the first stage of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth. The satellite had a variety of instruments on board to provide a complete set of data covering the depletion of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. It measured concentrations of gases responsible for ozone depletion and mapped the direction of the winds that disperse chemicals and aerosols in the upper atmosphere.
