Neelsen {loc. cit.) gave details regarding the microscopic appearancesof his specimen. The skin was fairly normal, but the lymphatics ofit and of the subcutaneous and intermuscular structures were greatlydilated and tortuous, and here and there formed real cystic spaces;possibly the large cysts marked a further evolution or the samechanges. In one or two cases the placenta was oedematous andfriable, but details regarding both it and the membranes were seldomforthcoming. CYSTIC ELEPHANTIASIS 299. 300 ANTENATAL PATHOLOGY AND HYGIENE The etiology was most obscure in all the recorded cases,—andthere seemed to be nothing to suggest a maternal cause. The natureof the morbid process was a condition of dilatation, or of dilatationand occlusion of lymphatic spaces and vessels, a this point most of the observers agreed; but whether thedistension of the lymphatics or the hyperplastic changes in thesubcutaneous tissue were to be regarded as the primary phenomenathere was very considerable difference of opinion. In the absence ofgeneral agreement upon these questions, it is needless to spend timediscussing the correctness of the term elephantiasis as applied tothe disease. In all probability it is in its first stages CBdematousin its nature ; but on account of the early period of intrauterine life atwhich it commences it takes on changes (due to the embryonic stateof the tissues) of a quite peculiar kind, ch
