The vegetation which insulated the frozen ground had been disturbed and a quagmire of thawed silt marked the army road. Original caption: 43-3722: This aerial view shows two trails across the large swamp just east of Beaver Creek. The one at the right is the badly rutted army road of 1942, the bottom has "thawed" out of it and it is impassable. A large side borrow may be seen at the corner of the road at the right. The road to the left is the new trail constructed by Contractor Lundeen, it has been constructed by end dumping with no side borrows as all of the material has been hauled from a large pit west of Beaver Creek. Truck turn arounds may be seen at somewhat regular intervals. Section B 2. Mile post 1463 September 2, 1943. Photo by Pinkstaff. State: Alaska.
