Stoneware bowl with sgraffito floral pattern, Jin dynasty, China, 12th-early 13th century. Artist: Unknown

Stoneware bowl with sgraffito floral pattern, Jin dynasty, China, 12th-early 13th century. The interior of this shallow circular bowl from Hunyuan kiln, Shanxi province, has a circular unglazed section in the centre for kiln staking, a feature characteristic of many Shanxi kilns. The interior and rim are covered by a white slip. The interior has two incised rows of petals carved through to the buff body of the piece in sgraffito style to accentuate the shape of the flecked and incised petals. The bowl (other than the unglazed ring) is covered by a transparent glaze of slightly greyish-green hue, the low flat foot rim is also unglazed.
