Merlion statue symbol of Singapore
Merlion statue: Icon of Singapore standing at the Esplanade in front of the Fullerton Hotel. Singapore. The Merlion {in Malay: Singa-Laut} is the icon of Singapore. It has the head of a lion and a tail like a fish. Singapore's original name was Singapura - meaning the Lions City - which was a fishing village, in Javanese: Temasek. So the lion head and the fish-like body represents the origin of Singapore in the Malay and Javanese language.
