Yellow neo-classical facade of the Old Church of the Augustinians between modern skyscrapers, Calle Moneda, Santiago, Chile
This former church, near La Moneda Presidential Palace, was declared a National Monument in 1977. It was formerly part of a religious house of Augustinian Nuns, the first cloister of Nuns in Chile established in the late 16th century. The neo-classical church of 1847 is the third on site, two others being destroyed by earthquakes in 1647 and 1730. Onward of 1852 the Nuns began selling land for urban developments, including the Stock Exchange and State Bank. By 1912 the Augustinian Nuns had moved to another location.
