Brown mould fungus. Light micrograph of a section through decaying plant tissue infected with brown mould fungus (Aspergillus glaucum). Aspergillus is a saprophyte mould that lives on decaying plant and animal matter, such as vegetables, old leather and paper. Stalk-like conidiophores (dark) develop from the mould's hyphae (tubular) and produce conidia (spores, dense patches). Air currents then distribute the conidia. Magnification: x138 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
