Amphipod parasite. Amphipod crustacean parasite, Phronima sedentaria, living inside a salp, Salpa maxima. The head of the parasite, with its large compound eyes, is at lower left. The white material (at centre) is the parasite's larvae. The crustacean separates an individual salp from the chain of creatures that S. maxima forms, and eats away the creature's central tissues. It then shelters inside the barrel-like remains and rears its young. P. sedentaria is common in the Mediterranean Sea and the subtropical Atlantic. Magnification: at 35mm size.
