The following general rule may be adopted for calculating thestrength of spirits, whether above or below proof, viz.:—To reducethe strength to hydrometer proof, divide the quantity by its degreesof strength, whether over or under hydrometer proof. When overproof, add the quotient to the quantity ; if under proof, subtract ittherefrom, which gives the quantity at hydrometer proof. A simple method of ascertaining the specific gravity, and conse-quent commercial value of Mther, Spirits, Sulphuric, and otheracids, &c, was recommended for twenty-five years by Sir JamesMurray, M. D. of Dublin, part of Avhose plan has been since adoptedby Mr. Gilpin.
