The works now have a capac-ity of about 30,000 tons of steel ingots per month, which is rolledinto rails (heavy, light and street), Open Hearth and Bessemer slabsand ingots for plates of all kinds, miscellaneous merchant steel,special steel billets and forgings. The Bridge and General Construction Department is ready toenter actively into business, while the production of the Frog,Switch and Signal Department stands second to none in the Pennsylvania s>tell oom twelve inches square and hammered into blooms for the rail mill. Since that time the works have progressed in equipment, capacity and specialization by the improvement of the old plant and the building of the following new departments : 1872: Frog Shop. 1873 : No. 1 Blast Furnace, 16x65 feet. No. 2 Blast Furnace, 20x80 feet, and an Open Hearth Depart-ment of two 5-ton furnaces, which have since been demol-ished. No. 1 Blooming Mill, three 2 Bessemer, three 7 ton converters. New Frog, Switch and Signal Department. Merchant Millwith 20 and 13 trains. During this year a school-housecosting about 170,000 was built by the Company and presentedto the borough of Steelton. 1883 : The No. 1 Bessemer was run for six months with basic lin-ings, this being the first regular basic Bessemer practice evercarried on in this country. 1S84: No. 1 Open Hearth, two 25-ton furnaces.
