He graduatedfrom Princeton witli the degree of Bachelor ofArts in the Class of 1841, receiving the degree ofMaster of Arts in course in 1S44. During hisSenior year lie was chosen by Professor JosephHenry to be his x^ssistant, and at this time acquired. J. E. RAMSEY great strength of character both intellectually andmorally, was the daughter of Samuel Dickey, whowas one of the first in the United States to engagein cotton manufacture. She was a first cousin ofRev. John M. Dickey, , widely known as thefounder of Lincoln University. John E. Ramseylived on his fathers farm in Chester county untileighteen years of age, attended the public schoolof his district, and was fitted for College at theOxford Academy. He entered Princeton in thefall of 1871, stood well in his class, but left at closeof his Sophomore year to enter business, thedeath of his father having interfered with his plansfor graduation.
