This castle is associated with an incident of the Civil Wars of the seventeenth were at length compelled to surrender at discretion, or, at least, with only the guarantee of the lives of the soldiers and inferior officers. But Lord Goring was reserved to be dealt with by the Parliament, as was, too, Lord Capel, who was with him at Colchester.
