The varied character of the service in which most of the com-panies of the Third Cavahy were engaged, being stationed atdifferent points in Missouri and Kansas, makes it exceedingly diffi-cult to give much of their history, as the reports sent into theAdjutant Generals office are deficient in information as to theirseveral operations.
