Chickenpox and eczema. Chickenpox and atopic eczema on the face of a five-month-old baby. Chickenpox (or varicella), a common infectious disease of childhood, is characterized by the eruption of a rash over most of the body. The rash appears in crops and consists of clusters of small, red, itchy spots that become fluid filled blisters. Rest is usually all that is needed for recovery with calamine lotion applied to ease the itchiness. Atopic eczema is a chronic condition common in babies in which an intensely itchy rash occurs, seen here as the red scaly area over the baby's cheeks. It also occurs in the creases of the elbows and knees.
