Pike Place Market dates back to 1907. Internationally recognized as America's premier farmers' market with nearly 200 year-round commercial businesses, 190 craftspeople and 120 farmers who rent table space by the day, plus 240 street performers and musicians; and 300 apartment units, most of which house low-income elderly people. The market covers nine acres 9 acres and has been going 100 years, a hundred years, a century. It is also called "The Soul of Seattle." Between 1906 and 1907, citizens in Seattle were angry at the rising cost of onions and having to sell through a middlemen. Seattle City Councilman Thomas Revelle proposed a public street market that would connect farmers directly with consumers. On August 17, 1907, Pike Place Market was born and established and founded. On the first day eight farmers brought their wagons to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street. Shoppers flocked to the wagon to buy produce and by late morning they were sold out. By the end of 1907, the first Market building opened, with every space filled. The Market attracts 10 million visitors a year and is one of Washington's most frequently visited destinations and top attractions Here is the first ever Starbucks, stalls bulging with fruit, vegetables, jewellery, crafts, flowers and seafood. Try clam chowder, watch street theatre or try to photograph the famous ‘fish slinging’ fishermen throwing huge salmon. At The Athenian Inn Tom Hanks shot a scene from ‘Sleepless in Seattle’.
