Farmers Muck Truck spreading agriculture silage effluent on waterlogged sodden fields during a weather window, using hard paths and roads where available because the paddocks are sodden and unable to support the weight of the New Holland T6000 Range Command Tractor & trailer without compacting the soils. Each year, an estimated 90 million tonnes of manure and slurry are spread to land, posing a water pollution concern. To dispose of extra farmyard sewage, farmers must disperse liquid waste at other times of the year. Trough of Bowland AONB, Lancashire, United Kingdom, February 2014.
Livestock and non-livestock farmers can attest to the positive value of manure and other agricultural source materials (ASM) used in crop production. Valuable nutrients and organic matter are supplied through these products. Nutrients help reduce crop input costs while increases in organic matter lead to better soil structure and higher crop yields. Proper management of manure and other agricultural source materials will maximize their value while minimizing their environmental impact. The Nitrates Directive aims to protect water quality by ensuring the correct amount of nutrients are applied under favourable conditions and at a time that they can be used by growing crops or grass. One of the key requirements of the Nitrates Action Programme which assists in achieving this is the closed spreading period for organic manures and farmyard manure. Spreading slurry and manure at the right time helps to maximise the efficient use of the valuable nutrients they contain. The closed period prohibits organic manures, excluding dirty water, from being spread from midnight 15 October to midnight 31 January. Farmyard manure must not be applied from midnight 31 October to midnight 31 January. These periods represent the time when the risk of nutrient loss to water is at its highest and there is little or no plant growth.
