Polarised light micrograph of Bracklesham limestone in thin section. The limestone takes its name from the town on the south coast of England where the limestone beds are found. The sediments that form this limestone were laid down in the early paleocene period of around 60 million years ago. The concentric circular objects seen are sections through fossilised remnants of the foraminifer Nummulites laevigatus that typify this formation. Magnification x40 at 35mm size.
