Amniocentesis. Artwork showing an amniocentesis test being performed on a pregnant woman. First an ultrasound transducer is used to determine the best location for extraction. A needle is then inserted through the woman's abdomen into the amniotic sac surrounding the foetus. A sample of the amniotic fluid is extracted and then screened for genetic or chromosomal disorders, such as Down's syndrome.
