Illustrations of phrenology : being a selection of articles from the Edinburg [sic] phrenological journal, and the Transactions of the Edinburg [sic] Phrenological Society . at least distinguish each one fromthe others. In enumerating the faculties, I have placed them in that suc-cession which appeared to me to be most conformable to their rela-tive functions and the position of their organs. I have not jncluded the external senses among the intellectualfaculties, for they are not, it seems to me, at all intellectual: theydo not see into any thing: they do not form ideas. They are butthe passive mirrors on which impressions from without are made:the internal senses, the perceptive intellectual faculties, take cog-nizance of these impressions. The external senses are like asheet of white paper, upon which the objects of the externalworld are written; but the characters thus written are read andinterpreted by other faculties. As the enumeration of the individual faculties is merely madeto enable the reader to understand the allusions to them and theposition of their organs, I have only indicated by a few words thefunction of each. 32 • SS.
