This illustration replicates an ancient Egyptian war dance and was found in a tomb that dates to shortly after the Sixth Dynasty. Such scenes were familiar in tombs at Siut, Bersheh, and Beni-Hasan. There, the troops were almost constantly involved in military matters that their generals deemed it necessary to include such scenes in their tombs. It is based on a drawing by Jean-Francois Champollion, the decipherer of hieroglyphs. It appeared in Gaston Maspero's Art of Egypt in 1921.
