The Norman keep was built between 1158 and 1164. Piers Gaveston was besieged and captured here by the Earl of Pembroke in 1312. During the Civil War the Castle was starved into surrender in 1645 and 1648, and bombarded by a German battleship in 1914. George Fox the Quaker was imprisoned here from 1665 to 1666.
