Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope being assembled prior to launch. This is the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor instrument. Fermi will study high-energy phenomena such as supermassive black holes and gamma ray bursts from a low Earth orbit. Fermi was launched on 11th June 2008 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA. It orbits Earth at an altitude of 550 kilometres. This space observatory was formerly known as the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST.
