Nanotube technology. Conceptual computer artwork of the Earth orbiting inside a fullerene torus. The molecular model shows the hexagonal carbon structure found in carbon nanotubes, which are a cylindrical form of fullerenes, a structural form (allotrope) of carbon. Theoretically, a wide range of molecular shapes can be engineered at the molecular level using fullerenes, such as the torus seen here. Such structures could have worldwide technological and medical uses.
