The black eyes of the shark. California, US: THIS PHOTO showing a shark ripping its bloody meal to shreds would terrify most people yet these misunderstood creatures are essential to the ocean ecosystem. One image shows the shark lunging for its dinner, a mess of fish parts on a hook while another shows it gliding across the ocean on its unceasing hunt for food. The shortfin mako shark, also known as the blue pointer, can reach lengths of 13 feet and grow to weigh 1,260 pounds. They are an endangered species and are shown to be incredibly friendly to human. In 442 years, since record began in 1580, there has only ever been nine attacks recorded on humans, with only three fatalities. Due to their speed and size they are often blamed for attacks, however very rarely cause any harm to humans. These images were captured by ocean expedition leader and photographer Evans Baudin (33) just off Cabo San Lucas in Baja, California. For this he used a Sony Alpha 7RIII camera in a waterproof housing. ?Sharks are essential elements to the ocean, they play a vital role by maintaining the ecosystem in balance,? said Evans. ?Today unfortunately, most shark populations around the world are in decline due to overfishing. ?They are not what the media have portrayed for decades, they are actually pretty shy creatures who like to keep their distance most of the time. ?That day I was leading a shark dive off Cabo San Lucas in Mexico, looking for mako and blue sharks, when suddenly, after three hours of waiting, this seven foot mako showed up and decided to spend the next two hours with us. ?This shark was very gentle and kind of curious towards our group of snorkelers. Never aggressive, showing no type of worrying behaviour. ?It?s an incredible feeling of serenity and peace. I don't like to use terms like "adrenaline" or "aggressive" when talking about sharks. ?Sharks deserve our respect, it's important to be extra careful when sharing a moment with species like this, especially makos.
