Sudan 1. Computer model of a molecule of the dye Sudan 1. It has the formula The atoms are shown as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (orange), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (blue) and oxygen (red). Sudan 1 is a red industrial dye. It is used to colour oils, waxes, petrol and shoe and floor polishes. It is also used to colour food products, although its use has been banned in the European Union since 1995 when it was found to cause malignant (cancerous) tumours in rats fed on the dye. Since the ban there have been 2 cases of Sudan 1 contaminated foodstuffs in the UK, the most recent in February 2005.
