Alcoholic cerebellar atrophy. Light micrograph of a section through a brain affected by cerebellar atrophy due to alcohol abuse. Atrophy is the wasting away of part of the body. In this case it has affected the cerebellum of the brain. Here, Purkinje cells, a type of nerve cell, can be seen, along with empty spaces where some of these cells have wasted away.
