Whittle Colliery at Newton on the Moor operated this last surviving Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn 18in 0-6-0T No. 31. It became one of the most unpopular engines on the entire coalfield and was only bought out of store when serious motive power shortages occurred. Accidents including a rake of runaway wagons which hit the engine broadside caused chronic ailments, leaking boiler stays; and a fractured steam chest. One frustrated driver said “it’s a race to get the work done before the engine empties its water all over the track, you can’t see where you’re going for leaking steam” — but this unhappy engine is loved by the camera. The rusty smokebox testifies to time in store. The high placement of spectacle glasses in the cab necessitated that drivers stand on wooden crates for a clear view ahead.
