Water flea and spirogyra. Polarised light micrograph of a Hydorus sp. water flea (order Cladocera, round) amongst Spirogyra sp. algae. Water fleas are small crustaceans, commonly found in fresh water. They are filter feeders that ingest algae, protozoa or organic matter, and are a constituent of plankton. Spirogyra is a filamentous green algae named for the spiral arrangement of its chloroplasts (green). It's cylindrical cells connect end to end in long green filaments. Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
