24th Annual International Lineman's Rodeo

Lineman's Rodeo is easily described as "track and field" for our electrical line trade. It is most commonly compared to lumberjack events that you may have seen on television. Our events are made up of new and traditional methods of performing linework in both simulated energized and de-energized situations. Although, the events at the rodeo are truly competitive, the long-term benefits are focused on improved safety, enhanced job skills, job knowledge, developing inter-company relationships and improved teamwork and attitude for participants. The event format for almost every rodeo is similar consisting of a pole climb, hurt-man rescue and 2 mystery events that are disclosed the day before the event. Journeymen compete on a 3-man team (2 climbers, 1 groundman) and apprentices compete solo. Mystery events - are usually made up of basic linework maintenance (transformer, insulator and crossarm change-out) using either hot stick or rubber gloving methods. These events will vary with tools provided and construction standards being used. Pole Climb - is defined as the safe and efficient ascent and descent of the pole by a climber. In other words, get up and down the pole as fast as you can safely. Hurt-man rescue - is the rescue of a simulated injured co-worker on a pole. Climber must put on tools and retrieve the injured person from the pole (185 lb. Mannequin) and begin administering medical attention. This is probably the most important event in the rodeo. Hurt-man rescue is one area that ALL lineman in our trade NEED TO BE PROFICIENT. Seconds count when you have an injured person on a pole.
