Hurricane Emily. Satellite image of Hurricane Emily (centre) approaching Yucatan (left), Mexico, on 17 July 2005 at 1625 GMT. Tens of thousands of people, many of them tourists, have been evacuated from the area. Cuba is at upper right of the hurricane, while Honduras and Nicaragua are just below. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kph. At the time this image was taken, Emily was classified as a category 4 hurricane, producing winds of 215 kilometres per hour. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on board NASA's Terra satellite.
