The PlatteCountry was in northwest embraced what are today the sixcounties of Atchison, Holt, Noda-way, idrew, Buchanan, andPlatte. The Sac and Fox Indiansoccupied it but already some whitesettlers had settled there. TheUnited States Government in 1836gave the Indians $7,500 and a tractof land in Kansas a,nd the Indiansin return gave up claim to thePlatte country. By 1836 the people wanted better transportation so inthat year a railroad convention was held in St. was enthusiastic and the Legislature chartered anumber of railroad lines. Nothing further was done, how-ever, and it was fifteen years before railroad building beganin Missouri. Governor Boggs administration was most important andexciting.
