Tibetan skyscape. Evening twilight fading to darkness above mountains and Laigu Glacier (far right) in Qamdo Prefecture, Tibet, China. Laigu Glacier is the joint name for a group of glaciers. It is one of the three largest glaciers in the world. The name Laigu comes from a nearby Tibetan village. At centre is the central bulge of the Milky Way, and the waxing crescent Moon. Airglow (red, left) is a phenomenon where a planetary atmosphere emits a faint glow when atoms are excited by sunlight. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Photographed on 17 October 2015.
