The government of the Jews, so far as this country is concerned,is vested in each separate congregation, which appoints its own minis-ter, who discharges his duties without ordination. They sustain theirown poor, and are remarkably free from criminals. They have severaladmirable schools in different parts of the country, and Sabbath-schoolsare attached to all their principal congregations. They have one ortwo periodicals, and are rapidly increasing in the land. They are sup-posed to have about 100 ministers, and 75,000 members. The censusof 1850 gives them the number of 31 church edifices, which are capa-ble of accommodating 16,575 persons, and are of the value of $371, men among them, however, have maintained that they havenot less than sixty houses of religious worship, and that their numberin this country, is not less than one hundred thousand 84S LATTER DAY SAINTS, OR MORMONS.
