Gilbert Declat (1827-1896), French physician. Declat was born in Nice and died in Saint-Martin d'Estreaux, both in France. Aware of Pasteur's work on microbes, Declat was an early proponent of sterility in surgery, with his work being noted by the French Academy of Science in 1861. He then published 'Nouvelles Applications de l'acide phenique en medicine et en Chirurgie' (1865), detailing the use of phenol (carbolic acid) to sterilise wounds. This work both pre-dated and indirectly influenced that of Lister in 1867. Artwork from the 19th volume (first period of 1897) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
